Chapter 6. Licenses and Site Activations

Renewals and Licenses

A renewal extends the license it belongs to, so the customer keeps their sites. PaddleSubs finds the license in one of two ways:

  • An automatic renewal of a Paddle subscription belongs to the license that subscription created. Each renewal adds the next period to it.

  • A manual renewal comes from the Renew link beside the license on the customer's licenses page. The link opens the product page with the license attached; the purchase extends that license, after PaddleSubs checks that it belongs to the buyer. A purchase made any other way creates a new license. A license you granted by hand is renewed the same way, after the granted access ends. The link isn't shown while a Paddle subscription renews the license, since buying again would start a second subscription for the same license.

A license whose Paddle subscription is canceled keeps the time already paid for, and can still be renewed by hand. A new Paddle subscription started from the Renew link attaches to the license.

If a customer changes their Paddle subscription to another product, the new product gets its own license; licenses never move between products. The new license starts with no sites: the customer (or the software they use) activates their sites on it again. A site is bound once per product, so the old license holding it does not stand in the way; it keeps its sites until its time is over. The credit Paddle gives for the rest of the old product's period buys nothing.
