Chapter 4. Understanding PaddleSubs

Custom Products and Prices

Paddle has two kinds of product and price. A Standard one is part of your catalog: Paddle shows it in its dashboard and lists it to PaddleSubs. A custom one is made for one deal, such as a negotiated price for one customer, and Paddle leaves it out of both.

PaddleSubs keeps custom products and prices for you and never offers them to anyone else:

  • They are listed on the Products page and among a product's prices with a Custom badge, and you edit them as usual.

  • Your site never shows them: not in product lists, not on a product's page, not in the price and link tags in articles, and not as a price to switch a Paddle subscription to. A custom product has no page on the site at all. A custom price can belong to a standard product, which keeps offering its standard prices.

  • You sell them from the New Payment Link or Invoice page: a link to a Paddle checkout that you send the customer, or an invoice that Paddle emails them. When they pay, the purchase is granted like one made on the site: an Access Subscription for the price's period, the product's groups, and a license if the product is licensed.

Paddle also makes custom prices of its own, when an invoice or a transaction is created in Paddle with an amount typed in rather than one of your prices. PaddleSubs has never seen such a price, so it can't tell how long the access it buys should last, and puts the purchase on hold. Set the price up from the Needs Attention page with Set Up Price, and the purchase is granted straight away.

Example 4.1. A three-year agency deal

An agency wants your licensed plugin for 25 sites for three years at a price you agreed. Add a product “Plugin, agency” with Type set to Custom and 25 Sites per purchase, and give it a Non-Recurring price of three years, also Custom. Then create an invoice for it to the agency's email address. Paddle emails the invoice; when the agency pays it, PaddleSubs gives the agency's account a license for 25 sites for three years. Nobody else ever sees the product.
