Access, Stacking and Licensed Products
Each product has a Purchase Type setting that decides what a purchase gives and what a second purchase does:
- Access: another purchase adds time (stacking) (the default)
-
A second purchase continues where the customer's current access ends. Buy a year in March, buy another year in June, and the second year starts next March. Nobody loses time by renewing early. This is what most memberships want.
- Access: every purchase starts now
-
Every purchase starts now, whatever the customer already has. Two purchases overlap, and the customer has access until the later of the two ends.
- Licenses per site
-
Every purchase is a license with a number of seats, and each seat can be used on one site. A renewal extends the license it belongs to instead of stacking. See Chapter 6, Licenses and Site Activations.
A purchase stacks behind the customer's published and pending Access Subscriptions of the product, not behind ones you unpublished or trashed. Stacking also counts access imported from another system: a customer who still has six months of imported access and buys a year gets the year after the six months. Access an administrator granted by hand counts the same way.
Every purchase is one unit of one price: the checkout doesn't let a customer buy several at once. A customer who wants more, for example to pay ahead before a price rise, buys again, and with a stacking product each purchase continues where the last ends. A licensed product gives each license the seats its Sites per purchase sets.
