Glossary
- Access level
Joomla's way of deciding who can see an article, category, menu item or module: a list of user groups. Give protected content an access level that includes the group a product grants.
See Also User group.
- Access Subscription
PaddleSubs' record that a customer has access to a product from one date to another. Every purchase creates one, whether it renews automatically or not, and every renewal creates another. Not the same as a Paddle subscription.
See Also Paddle subscription, Window.
- Activation
One site bound to one seat of a license, made by the software on the site through the licensing API.
See Also License.
- Adjustment
Paddle's record of money going back after a payment: a refund, a credit or a chargeback, and their reversals.
- API key
A secret that lets your site read and change your Paddle account. Created in Paddle under → → ; sandbox and live accounts have separate keys.
- Category
A Joomla category of PaddleSubs products, used to organize product pages. Categories can nest.
- Client-side token
A public key that lets Paddle.js, in your visitors' browsers, show prices and open the checkout. Safe to show in pages, unlike the API key.
- Custom data
Extra information Paddle keeps on a product, price, discount or transaction for your own use. PaddleSubs stores its settings there, so they can be rebuilt on another site.
- Custom product, custom price
A Paddle product or price made for one deal rather than for your catalog. Paddle leaves it out of its catalog; PaddleSubs lists it for the administrator and never offers it on the site. See the section called “Custom Products and Prices”.
- Customer
Someone Paddle has billed, known to Paddle by their email address. PaddleSubs connects each customer to a Joomla account.
- Customer conflict
A Paddle customer PaddleSubs could not safely connect to one Joomla account, for example because the email address matches two accounts. The purchase gives no access until the conflict is resolved.
- Development site
A site address used for building or testing, such as
localhost, an IP address or a name ending in.localor.test. A licensed product can let them activate without using a seat.- Download Key
The key from your account on paddlesubs.com that you enter for PaddleSubs in → . It identifies you to paddlesubs.com when the site downloads an update or is activated on your license. See the section called “Updates and Your License”.
- Imported Access Subscription
An Access Subscription carried over from another subscription system by the import wizard. It has no Paddle transaction, and nothing about it is sent to Paddle.
- Level
A tier that groups products, such as Basic or Pro. A level's user groups are granted by every product in it. Levels exist only on your site, not in Paddle.
- License
What a purchase of a licensed product creates, or access an administrator grants to one: permission to use the product on a number of sites, its seats. Renewals extend it.
See Also Seat, Activation.
- Mapping profile
A file that tells the import wizard where another system keeps its users, products, prices and access, and how to read them.
- Merchant of record
The business that legally sells to the customer, and so collects and pays the tax and handles refunds. Paddle is the merchant of record for your sales; you sell to Paddle.
- Paddle subscription
A purchase of a recurring price, which Paddle charges again every billing period until the customer cancels. Each charge creates a new Access Subscription.
- Pending
The state of an Access Subscription that is paid for and waits for its window to open, usually because it continues time the customer already has. The lifecycle task publishes it when its window opens.
See Also Window.
- Price
One way of paying for a product: an amount and either a billing cycle (recurring) or how long access lasts (one-time).
- Product
What you sell. It decides what a purchase grants; its prices decide what it costs.
- Public Suffix List
A public list of the endings under which people register domains, such as
.com,.co.ukorherokuapp.com. PaddleSubs uses it to tell which part of a host name is the site.- Quarantine
Where PaddleSubs sets aside a purchase it can't safely turn into access, such as one for a product your site doesn't know, instead of guessing. Each one is logged.
- Sandbox
Paddle's test environment: a separate account where you can buy with test cards and no real money changes hands.
- Seat
Room for one site on a license. A license has as many seats as its product's Sites per purchase.
- Secret key
The key Paddle signs each webhook with, shown in the notification destination. Your site uses it to check that a webhook really comes from Paddle.
- Transaction
One payment in Paddle: a checkout, a renewal, or a change to a Paddle subscription.
- Trial
A period at the start of a Paddle subscription before the full price is charged: free, or at a trial price such as an introductory price for the first year. It is set on a recurring price.
See Also Price.
- User group
A Joomla group of users, such as Registered. Products add customers to groups, and access levels decide what each group can see.
See Also Access level.
- Webhook
A message Paddle sends to your site when something happens, such as a payment or a refund. Paddle calls these notifications.
- Window
The period an Access Subscription gives access: from its start to its end, or with no end for lifetime access.
